HMRC investigation help in Newport, handled from the first letter
HMRC investigation help Newport business owners ask us for usually starts the same way, with a brown envelope that has been read four times and still makes no sense.
Most owners wait a week for their accountant to call back, then get an invoice for the call. We reply the same working day and agree a fixed fee in writing before we start. Tax investigation cover is included free for every client.
In one lineSupreme Consultants is an AAT licensed accountancy practice in Cardiff Bay that handles HMRC enquiries and investigations for business owners in Newport and across South Wales. Work is priced as a fixed fee agreed before it starts, and tax investigation cover is included free for every client.
Check we’re the right fit
A few questions about your business. Mudassir replies the same working day.
Thank you Mud, your help and support with my VAT return is greatly appreciated. Always a prompt response and my difficult VAT return was quickly submitted and resolved. Would definitely recommend.
Is your HMRC position in good hands? Three questions.
Answer with the buttons, no email needed.
Question 1 of 3
Does your accountant reply the same working day?
Do you know your fee will not change this year?
If HMRC opened a check tomorrow, would they deal with it at no extra cost?
Three noes means nobody is holding the line for you when the letter arrives. Run the check and we will tell you where you stand.
Start the checkThat is a reasonable position with one gap that matters the day HMRC writes. Worth a short conversation before it happens.
Start the checkYou are well served and there is nothing urgent here. Read the guides so you know what HMRC asks for if it ever does.

Investigation cover at no extra cost
Every client gets tax investigation cover, included free rather than sold as an add on. Every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won.
One person dealing with HMRC
We go on record as your agent and take the letters, the calls and the information requests. You hear what we sent and what comes next.
A fee you know before we start
The figure is agreed in writing up front. Calls, meetings and emails during the enquiry are never billed.
What Newport owners tell us when they ring
These are the three calls we take most often about HMRC.
“A letter came from HMRC about our VAT return and I do not know what they actually want.”
The deadline on it was 30 days. Two of those weeks went on waiting for a call back.
“The figures went in months ago and now HMRC says my bookkeeping does not support them.”
The records were in a carrier bag behind the till. Rebuilding them under a deadline costs far more than keeping them.
“I rang my accountant about the enquiry and got an invoice for the phone call.”
So the next three questions never got asked. That is usually where a check turns into a penalty.
What changes once we take it on
We get appointed as your agent and pull everything HMRC holds on you. You get one person answering the same working day and a written plan for what we send and when. You hear from us before HMRC does.
How most accountants handle an HMRC letter, and how we do
Plenty of firms do good work here. The difference is timing and billing.
A typical accountant when HMRC writes
Replies when they get to it, often the following week.
Investigation cover sold to you as a yearly add on.
The enquiry work is quoted separately once it has started.
You forward the letter and wait to hear what happened.
With Supreme Consultants
Same working day reply, every time.
Investigation cover included free for every client.
Fixed fee agreed in writing before any work starts.
We tell you what we sent HMRC and what happens next.
Eight questions to ask before HMRC asks them
Answer these honestly and you will know how exposed you are.
Has HMRC written to you in the last twelve months?
Check the date on the letter, because the clock on it started the day it was issued.
Do you know which tax the letter relates to?
VAT, PAYE and corporation tax enquiries each need a different answer and different records.
Can you produce bank statements for the period HMRC is asking about?
Bank data is where we rebuild figures when the bookkeeping is thin.
Are your sales records backed up by till or platform reports?
HMRC will compare declared takings against whatever your system actually recorded.
Is anyone on record with HMRC as your agent?
Without that, nobody else can see the position or speak to them for you.
Do you know whether your payments on account are set correctly?
Set too high, they quietly take cash out of the business all year.
Have you had a penalty you never appealed?
Some have grounds for appeal long after the event, and we look for those in the first month.
Do you have cover in place if an investigation runs on?
Ours is included free for every client, so the length of the enquiry does not change your fee.
What we do for your HMRC investigation
We take the correspondence off your desk and put a plan behind it.
All Services near you- Reading the letter properly
- We work out what HMRC is actually asking, which tax it covers and what the real deadline is.
- Dealing with HMRC direct
- We go on record as your agent and handle the calls, the letters and the information requests.
- Rebuilding the records
- Where the bookkeeping is thin or lost, we reconstruct it from bank data and invoices so the figures hold up.
- Penalties and payments
- We appeal penalties where there are grounds and unpick payments on account that were set too high.
- Stopping the next one
- Once it closes we tidy the bookkeeping and diarise every filing date for the year ahead.
What happens when someone actually reads your paperwork
A convenience store franchisee came to us still paying full business rates through Covid. Cardiff Council required an application for retail rates relief and nobody had told him.
Clients described by type. Names withheld.
- How it was found
- We spotted it in the first meeting, reading his rates bill alongside his accounts.
- What happened
- He got the money back, and he now asks the small questions because the call is never on the invoice.
Reviews from clients
Thank you Mud, your help and support with my VAT return is greatly appreciated. Always a prompt response and my difficult VAT return was quickly submitted and resolved. Would definitely recommend.
I just want to say a big thank you to Mudassir for all the advice, guidance and help he has provided whilst dealing with my accounts and tax returns. From start to finish the service has been excellent and professional. Unlike other accountancy firms they provide a friendly personalised service, I was very clear on the process and was even provided with additional guidance where needed. Highly recommended!
Friendly, nice 👌 , helpful and great all around
Difficult to describe as there are too many words that can be expressed for a wonderful accountant and their firm.
Definitely 🔝 and highly recommended in Wales 🏴 and throughout the UK for Accountancy and Tax Services

How switching to us works
Most of it happens without you doing much.
- Before you join
A free introductory chat
Tell us where things stand with HMRC and what the letter says. If we cannot genuinely help, we will say so.
- Week one
Fee agreed, records requested
We complete your ID checks, agree the fixed fee in writing, and write to your current accountant so you do not have to.
- First month
Authorised as your agent
We get appointed with HMRC and Companies House so we can see what they hold. Companies House ID verification is done free, as it was for every existing client.
- By ninety days
Every deadline mapped
VAT, payroll, accounts, corporation tax and self assessment are diarised for the year ahead, so the next HMRC letter is a formality.
Who we are not right for
We do not act for CIS construction subcontractors.
We do not take on charities.
We cannot take on a business that is already deep into an HMRC investigation before speaking to us.
If you are unsure which of those applies to you, run the check and we will tell you straight.
HMRC investigation help Newport: questions people ask
What does HMRC investigation help in Newport cost?
You pay a fixed fee agreed in writing before any work starts, and it does not move once the enquiry is under way. Calls, meetings and emails are never charged for. Tax investigation cover is included free for every client, so the length of the correspondence does not change what you pay us.
Can I switch accountants while HMRC is looking at my business?
Yes, provided the enquiry is not already well advanced. We write to your current accountant for professional clearance and your records, so you avoid that conversation. We then get appointed as your agent with HMRC and Companies House, which lets us see exactly what they hold on you.
What happens if HMRC writes to me after I have joined you?
Send us the letter the day it arrives and you get a reply the same working day. We confirm which tax it covers and what the real deadline is, then deal with HMRC directly as your agent. You are told what we sent and what to expect next.
Do I have to change my bookkeeping software?
No. We work with what you already use and only suggest a move if it makes the records easier to defend. If you do want to change, migration to Xero is free when you join us, and we set it up rather than leaving you to it.
Is tax investigation cover an extra I have to buy?
No. We include it free for every client because an HMRC enquiry is exactly when an owner should be able to ring without weighing up the cost. Every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won. We will not promise an outcome on yours, but you will not be alone in it.
Is HMRC investigation help in Newport done remotely or in person?
Either works. We are based at Titan House in Cardiff Bay, twenty minutes from Newport, and you are welcome to bring the paperwork in. Most of our clients deal with us by phone and email, and over 90% of our 100 plus clients are across South Wales.
