Corner shop accountants in Cardiff who keep your VAT and payroll right

Corner shop accountants Cardiff owners ring first when a VAT letter lands, or when the paperwork behind the till has been building up since the summer.

You sell zero-rated food next to standard-rated drinks, tobacco and top-ups, so one wrong till setting runs wrong all year. We agree a fixed fee before we start, reply the same working day, and tax investigation cover is included free for every client we act for.

In one lineSupreme Consultants is an AAT licensed accountancy practice in Cardiff Bay that handles bookkeeping, VAT, payroll and year-end accounts for corner shops and convenience stores in Cardiff and across South Wales. Fees are fixed and agreed before work starts, and tax investigation cover is included for every client.

Is your shop’s bookkeeping in good hands? Three questions.

Answer by button, no email needed.

Question 1 of 3

Does your accountant reply the same working day when you ring the shop phone?

What you get

HMRC cover at no extra cost

Tax investigation cover is included free for every client. Every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won.

VAT split correctly across your range

We check how your till codes food, drinks, tobacco and household goods, so your VAT return matches what you actually sold.

A fee you know before we start

One fixed monthly fee agreed in writing. Ring us when the till roll does not add up and the call costs nothing.

What shop owners tell us when they call

These are the three things we hear most from convenience store owners in Cardiff.

  • “I had a VAT letter in March and my accountant still has not come back to me about it.”

The query sat open for months and interest kept running on a figure nobody had checked.

  • “There is a carrier bag of till rolls and supplier invoices in the back room going back to April.”

Purchase VAT on stock went unclaimed because the paperwork was never put in front of anyone.

  • “I got charged for a ten minute phone call, so now I just do not ring.”

He stopped asking small questions, and a second shop was bought in the wrong name as a result.

  • What changes once we take it on

Your till, supplier invoices and bank feed go into one bookkeeping set-up we maintain. VAT, payroll and year-end accounts are diarised for the year ahead, so nobody is chasing you in week one of a deadline. When HMRC writes, you forward it to us and we answer it.

How this compares with a year-end-only accountant

Plenty of shops are looked after once a year, and for some that works.

A year-end-only arrangement

You hear from them when the accounts are due.

Bookkeeping stays with you or a family member.

Queries are billed by the hour or the letter.

HMRC correspondence is quoted for separately.

With Supreme Consultants

Same working day reply, all year.

Bookkeeping, VAT and payroll handled in one place.

Calls, meetings and emails are never charged for.

Tax investigation cover included free for every client.

Eight questions about how your shop is set up

Answer these before your next VAT quarter closes.

  • Does your till separate zero-rated food from standard-rated goods?

If it does not, your VAT return is built on a guess.

  • Are supplier invoices kept for every stock delivery?

Missing invoices mean purchase VAT you paid but never claimed.

  • Is your card machine income reconciled to your bank each month?

Unreconciled takings are the first thing an HMRC officer asks about.

  • Are all shop staff on a payroll with pension assessment?

Casual weekend cover still has to be reported in real time.

  • Have you applied for the rates relief your shop qualifies for?

Cardiff Council requires an application and will not apply it for you.

  • Do you know your VAT and accounts dates for the next twelve months?

If the dates live in your accountant’s head, they are not mapped.

  • Is cash drawn from the till recorded as drawings or wages?

Untracked cash is what turns a small query into a long one.

  • Would somebody answer an HMRC letter for you this week?

Cover only helps if the person holding it picks up the phone.

I just want to say a big thank you to Mudassir for all the advice, guidance and help he has provided whilst dealing with my accounts and tax returns. From start to finish the service has been excellent and professional. Unlike other accountancy firms they provide a friendly personalised service, I was very clear on the process and was even provided with additional guidance where needed. Highly recommended!

How switching to us works

Most of it happens without you doing anything beyond saying yes.

  3. First month

    Your past filings reviewed

We go through your accounts, VAT returns and HMRC record. This is where missed reliefs and appealable penalties usually turn up.

Who we are not right for

We do not take on CIS construction subcontractors.

We do not act for charities.

We do not take on a business that is already late in an HMRC investigation.

If your shop sits outside those three, start the check and we will tell you what we would do first.

Corner shop accountants Cardiff: questions people ask

How much do corner shop accountants in Cardiff charge?

We work on one fixed fee agreed before we start, billed monthly and set in writing after a free introductory chat. It depends on turnover, VAT registration, how many transactions go through the till and how many staff you pay. Calls, meetings and emails are never charged on top, so questions cost you nothing.

Can I switch accountants in the middle of my VAT year?

Yes. We write the professional clearance letter to your current accountant and collect your records, so you do not have that conversation. We then get authorised as your agent with HMRC and Companies House, handle Companies House ID verification where it is required at no charge, and migrate your bookkeeping to Xero free if you want to move.

What happens if HMRC writes to my shop about VAT?

You forward us the letter and we deal with it. Tax investigation cover is included free for every client, where other firms sell it as an add-on, and every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won. We answer the correspondence, gather what HMRC has asked for and keep you updated as it moves.

Do I have to change my till or my accounting software?

No. We work with the till and the records you already have, and we will tell you if a setting is coding your VAT wrongly. If you would rather move to Xero we migrate you free as part of switching. Nothing in the shop has to change in your first week with us.

Do you run payroll for shop staff as well?

Yes. Payroll, auto-enrolment, starters and leavers are part of the same fixed fee for most of our shop clients, whether you pay weekly or monthly. Weekend and holiday cover still has to be reported to HMRC in real time, and we handle that alongside your VAT and bookkeeping.

Do you only act for shops in Cardiff?

Cardiff is where most of our clients are, and we meet shop owners at Titan House in Cardiff Bay. We also act for convenience stores in Newport, Barry, Caerphilly, Swansea and Port Talbot, remotely or in person. We do not offer one-off self assessment work, so this is for shops wanting the year looked after.
