Accountants for furniture retailers in South Wales, on a fixed fee

Accountants for furniture retailers get called when a customer deposit, a twelve week delivery lead time and a VAT return all land in the same quarter.

Most showroom owners we meet are unsure when VAT falls due on a deposit taken in March for a sofa delivered in June. Tax investigation cover is included free for every client, so if HMRC asks about your returns, we answer them.

In one lineSupreme Consultants is an AAT licensed accountancy practice in Cardiff Bay that does the bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, accounts and corporation tax for furniture retailers across South Wales. The fee is fixed and agreed in writing before work starts, and tax investigation cover is included free for every client.

Is your furniture shop in good hands? Three questions.

Answer with the buttons; nothing is emailed to you.

Question 1 of 3

Does your accountant reply the same working day?

What you get

Tax investigation cover included free

If HMRC opens an enquiry into your shop, we deal with it and you pay us nothing extra. Other firms sell this as an add-on for £300 to £1,000 a year.

Deposits and deliveries in the right quarter

We set your records up so money taken on order and goods sent months later land in the correct VAT return.

A fee you know before we start

The fee is agreed in writing first, and calls, meetings and emails are never billed on top.

What furniture shop owners tell us

These are the three things we hear most in a first conversation with a showroom owner.

  • “I took a deposit on a dining set in March and it goes out in June. When is the VAT due?”

He left it off the March return. The correction came back with interest attached.

  • “The showroom is full of stock I paid for in January and the accounts say I made money I never saw.”

Stock was never counted properly, so his profit figure moved every year for no reason he could explain.

  • “I have paid full business rates since Covid and nobody ever mentioned relief.”

Welsh councils only give retail rates relief to businesses that apply for it, and nobody had applied.

  • What changes once we take it on

Your till, card machine and finance deals are reconciled monthly instead of once a year. Deposits, deliveries and stock are recorded the same way every quarter, so the VAT return stands up. You ring us when a figure looks wrong and it costs nothing.

How this compares with your current arrangement

Most furniture retailers come to us from a firm that does the accounts well and the rest slowly.

A once-a-year accountant

You hear from them after the year end.

A ten minute call appears on the invoice.

Investigation cover is sold as an extra each year.

Welsh rates reliefs are left to you to find.

With Supreme Consultants

A reply the same working day.

Calls, meetings and emails are never charged.

Tax investigation cover is included free.

We check the Welsh reliefs that apply to your shop.

Eight questions about your furniture shop’s books

Answer these before your next VAT quarter closes.

  • Do you know which quarter a customer deposit belongs in?

Deposits taken on order usually create a VAT point long before the delivery van moves.

  • Is your stock counted at the year end?

Without a count, your profit figure moves for reasons you cannot explain.

  • Are interest free credit and finance commissions recorded separately?

Finance income and the sale value need keeping apart in the books.

  • Do card machine takings match the till?

Gaps between the two are the first thing an HMRC check looks for.

  • Have you applied for Welsh retail rates relief?

Councils in Wales give it to businesses that apply, not automatically.

  • Are delivery and assembly costs tracked per order?

Otherwise your margin on bulky items is a guess.

  • Is your payroll filed to HMRC on time each month?

Late RTI submissions bring penalties that are easy to avoid.

  • Would someone answer today if HMRC wrote to you?

Our clients get a reply the same working day and we handle the letter.

What a first meeting found on one retailer’s rates bill

A Spar franchise owner with several stores came to us still paying full business rates from the Covid years. Retail businesses in Wales were entitled to relief, but Cardiff Council only gave it to those that applied.

Clients described by type. Names withheld.

£10,000of business rates relief found in a first meeting
How it was found
We checked his rates position against the Welsh retail relief rules before we had even taken him on.
What happened
He applied and it saved him £10,000.

I just want to say a big thank you to Mudassir for all the advice, guidance and help he has provided whilst dealing with my accounts and tax returns. From start to finish the service has been excellent and professional. Unlike other accountancy firms they provide a friendly personalised service, I was very clear on the process and was even provided with additional guidance where needed. Highly recommended!

Who we are not right for

We do not take on CIS construction subcontractors.

We do not do charity accounts.

We do not take on a business already late in an HMRC investigation.

If your shop falls outside those, start the check and we will tell you the same working day.

Accountants for furniture retailers: questions people ask

How much do accountants for furniture retailers charge?

We agree a fixed fee in writing before any work starts, based on your turnover, how many VAT returns you file and how many staff you pay. It does not move during the year. Calls, meetings and emails are never charged on top, so asking us a question about a deposit costs you nothing.

Can I switch accountants in the middle of the year?

Yes. We write to your current accountant for your records, so you do not have to make that call. We complete your ID checks, get authorised as your agent with HMRC and Companies House, and pick up the next VAT quarter. The handover and your first month carry no separate charge.

What happens if HMRC writes to me about my VAT?

Send us the letter and we deal with HMRC for you. Tax investigation cover is included free for every client, where other firms sell it as an add-on for £300 to £1,000 a year. Every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won. We cannot take on a business already late in an investigation.

Do I have to change my accounting software?

No. We work with the cloud software you already use for your till, orders and bank feed. If you want to move to Xero, we migrate you free of charge and set the chart of accounts up for a showroom, with stock, deposits and delivery costs kept separate.

Do accountants for furniture retailers deal with VAT on customer deposits?

We do. A deposit taken when a customer orders a sofa usually creates a VAT point then, not on the day it is delivered weeks later. We set your records up so each payment lands in the right quarter and the return matches your till and card machine reports.

Do you work with furniture shops outside Cardiff?

Yes. We are based at Titan House in Cardiff Bay and work across South Wales, including Newport, Swansea, Caerphilly, Barry and Port Talbot, plus Bristol over the bridge. Work is done remotely, in person at our office, or a mix. Over 90% of our clients are in South Wales.
