Is your shop in good hands? Three questions.

Answer with the buttons, no email needed.

Question 1 of 3

Does your accountant reply the same working day?

What you get

Tax investigation cover included free

If HMRC opens an enquiry into the shop we deal with it and you pay us nothing extra. Every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won.

A fee you know before we start

It is agreed in writing. Calls, meetings and emails are never charged on top, so ring us when the till roll does not add up.

We take the paperwork as well

Card machine statements, supplier invoices, the carrier bag of receipts. We get them into cloud software and keep the VAT return on time.

What shop owners tell us when they call

These are the three things we hear most from convenience store owners in Barry.

  • “HMRC has written to me about my VAT and I do not know what the letter means.”

Most owners sit on it for a fortnight because nobody will explain it. The date in the letter does not move while they wait.

  • “The paperwork is piling up behind the till and I never get round to it.”

Receipts go missing and the VAT return ends up filed on guesswork. HMRC VAT checks on shops are getting more common.

  • “I got a bill I cannot make sense of and my accountant has not called back.”

A week goes by, then an invoice arrives for the call itself. You still do not know what the bill was for.

  • What changes once we take it on

Your takings, card machine and supplier invoices go into cloud software every month. We file the VAT return and tell you what is due before it is due. When an HMRC letter lands, you send us a photo of it and we answer it.

How this compares with the usual arrangement

Plenty of firms do good work for shops. The difference is what happens between the deadlines.

A typical high street firm

You see the accounts once a year, after year end.

The call gets logged and appears on the next invoice.

Investigation cover is sold on top, often £300 to £1,000 a year.

The VAT letter waits until someone has time.

With Supreme Consultants

A reply the same working day, every working day.

Calls, meetings and emails are never charged.

Tax investigation cover is included free for every client.

You send us the HMRC letter and we answer it.

Eight questions about how your shop is set up

A yes to all eight means the books are in order.

  • Are your daily takings recorded somewhere other than the till roll?

A till report alone does not satisfy an HMRC VAT check.

  • Do you keep supplier invoices for stock you buy for cash?

Cash purchases without invoices cannot be claimed.

  • Is your VAT scheme still the right one for the shop?

Retail schemes get picked once and then forgotten.

  • Are your card machine takings reconciled to the bank each month?

The gap between the two is usually fees nobody has recorded.

  • Do you know your next VAT and corporation tax dates without looking?

We map every deadline in the first month.

  • Have you applied for any Welsh business rates relief you are due?

Welsh councils make you apply, so it is missed often.

  • Are staff on payroll with pensions and RTI filed each month?

Casual shop staff are where payroll problems start.

  • If HMRC wrote about your VAT, is there someone who would answer it?

That is what the included cover is for.

What we do for your corner shop

One fixed fee covers the lot for most VAT registered shops.

What a first meeting with a shop owner can turn up

A Spar franchise owner with several stores came to us still paying full business rates from the Covid years. Retail businesses in Wales were entitled to relief, but Cardiff Council only gave it to businesses that applied.

Clients described by type. Names withheld.

£10,000of business rates relief found in a first meeting
How it was found
We went through his rates bills and saw he had never made the application the council required.
What happened
It saved him £10,000, and we now check Welsh reliefs for every retail client we take on.

I just want to say a big thank you to Mudassir for all the advice, guidance and help he has provided whilst dealing with my accounts and tax returns. From start to finish the service has been excellent and professional. Unlike other accountancy firms they provide a friendly personalised service, I was very clear on the process and was even provided with additional guidance where needed. Highly recommended!

Who we are not right for

We do not take on CIS construction subcontractors.

We do not do charity accounts.

We cannot take on a business that is already late in an HMRC investigation.

If your shop sits outside those three, start the check and we will tell you the same working day.

Corner shop accountants Barry: questions people ask

What do corner shop accountants in Barry charge?

We agree a fixed fee in writing before any work starts, so you know it before you commit. It depends on whether you are VAT registered, how many staff are on payroll and how many shops you run. Calls, meetings and emails are never charged on top of it.

How do I switch accountants if I already have one?

You answer the questions on this page and we do the rest. We write to your current accountant for your records, so you never have to make that call. We also handle the ID checks, the HMRC and Companies House agent authorisations, and your first month and Companies House ID verification carry no separate charge.

What happens if HMRC writes to me or checks my VAT?

You send us the letter and we deal with HMRC for you. Tax investigation cover is included free for every client, where other firms sell it as an add-on for £300 to £1,000 a year. Every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won. We cannot take on a business that is already late in an investigation.

Do I have to change my till or my accounting software?

No. Your till stays as it is and we work with the software you already use. If you want to move to Xero we do the migration free, and we will tell you plainly whether moving is worth the disruption for a shop your size. Making Tax Digital records are kept either way.

Do you visit Barry or is everything done online?

Both work. We are based at Titan House in Cardiff Bay and Barry is one of the South Wales towns we cover. Most shop clients send paperwork in digitally and meet us when something needs a conversation, such as a second shop or an HMRC letter. Come to the office if you prefer.

Can you handle more than one shop?

Yes. We look after independent retailers and franchise owners with several stores, including payroll across sites and management accounts so you can see which shop makes money. One retail client came to us after his previous accountant died, and once the books were rebuilt he grew from one store to five.
