Sole trader accountants in Barry who answer the phone and file on time

Sole trader accountants Barry owners look for are usually wanted in January, when the Self Assessment deadline is close and the last email has gone unanswered for a week.

Most sole traders we meet hear from their accountant once a year, and every call ends up on an invoice. We agree a fixed fee in writing before we start, calls and emails are free, and tax investigation cover is included free for every client.

In one lineSupreme Consultants is an AAT licensed accountancy practice at Titan House in Cardiff Bay that does bookkeeping, VAT, payroll and Self Assessment for sole traders in Barry and across South Wales. Work is done on a fixed fee agreed before it starts, with tax investigation cover included free.

Is your sole trader set-up in good hands? Three questions.

Answer by button and the result appears on this page.

Question 1 of 3

Does your accountant reply the same working day?

What you get

Tax investigation cover at no extra charge

If HMRC opens an enquiry into your trade, we deal with it and you do not pay us more. Other firms sell this as an add-on for £300 to £1,000 a year.

A fee you know before we start

We agree it in writing. Ring us when the figures on your bank statement do not match your invoices and it costs nothing.

Every deadline mapped for the year

You know when your return is due, what you owe and when payments on account land, well before January.

What Barry sole traders tell us when they call

Three things we hear most weeks from people trading on their own account.

  • I sent my books in October and I still have not been told what I owe HMRC in January.

He had no time to put money aside, so the bill landed as a shock and the payment on account came three weeks later.

  • Every time I ring with a quick question there is a line for it on the next invoice.

So he stopped ringing, guessed at what he could claim, and missed reliefs worth more than the calls.

  • HMRC wrote to me about my turnover and I do not know what the letter actually means.

The letter sat on the kitchen table for a fortnight because nobody would explain it without charging for the time.

  • What changes once we take it on

We go through your past returns and your HMRC record in the first month. That is where payments on account set too high, unclaimed reliefs and penalties worth appealing turn up. After that you get your figures in good time, and you can ring us whenever you want.

How this compares with a once-a-year arrangement

Plenty of sole traders in Barry are on the usual arrangement, and it works for some of them.

The usual once-a-year arrangement

You hear from them when the return is due.

Calls and short questions are billed.

The fee is confirmed after the work.

Investigation cover is sold as an add-on.

With Supreme Consultants

A reply the same working day, all year.

Calls, meetings and emails are never charged.

A fixed fee agreed in writing before we start.

Tax investigation cover included free.

Eight questions about how you trade now

A yes means it is covered already.

  • Do you know today roughly what your January bill will be?

Knowing early is the difference between saving for it and borrowing for it.

  • Are your bank records reconciled at least monthly?

Monthly records mean the return is a review rather than a rebuild.

  • Do you track your rolling twelve month turnover against the VAT threshold?

Crossing it without noticing means backdated VAT on sales you have already made.

  • Have you checked whether your payments on account are set too high?

They are based on last year, so a quieter year means you can ask for them to be reduced.

  • Do you keep business and personal spending in separate accounts?

Mixed accounts take longer to sort and cost you claimable expenses.

  • Can you get an answer from your accountant in a day?

A week’s wait turns a quick decision into a guess.

  • Do you know whether trading as a limited company would suit you better?

It depends on your profit and what you draw, and it is worth a yearly look.

  • Would somebody deal with an HMRC letter for you without a new invoice?

With us that is included free for every client.

I just want to say a big thank you to Mudassir for all the advice, guidance and help he has provided whilst dealing with my accounts and tax returns. From start to finish the service has been excellent and professional. Unlike other accountancy firms they provide a friendly personalised service, I was very clear on the process and was even provided with additional guidance where needed. Highly recommended!

Sole trader accountants Barry: questions people ask

How much do sole trader accountants in Barry charge?

We do not publish figures because the work differs by trade and turnover. You answer a few questions, we look at what you actually need, and we agree a fixed fee in writing before any work starts. Calls, meetings and emails are never charged on top of it, however often you ring.

How do I switch accountants if I am a sole trader?

You answer the questions on this page. Once we agree the fee, we complete your ID checks and write to your current accountant for your records, so you do not have to make that call. HMRC then authorises us as your agent. The handover carries no separate charge.

What happens if HMRC checks my return or writes to me?

You send us the letter and we deal with HMRC for you. Tax investigation cover is included free for every client, where other firms sell it as an add-on for £300 to £1,000 a year. Every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won. We never promise an outcome on any case.

Do I have to change my bookkeeping software?

No. We work with the cloud software you already use. If you want to move to Xero we do the migration free, and if you are still on a spreadsheet or a shoebox of receipts we will take the paperwork as well and tell you what we need each month.

Will you do a one-off tax return for me?

No. We only prepare Self Assessment returns for sole traders, directors and partners who are ongoing clients, because one return on its own gives us no view of your position. If you want somebody looking after your records and deadlines through the year, that is the work we do.

Do I need to come to Cardiff Bay, or can this be done remotely?

Either. Barry is twenty minutes from our office at Titan House in Cardiff Bay, so you can come in, or we can do everything remotely, or mix the two. We reply the same working day on the phone, by email or through the client portal.
