HMRC investigation help in Barry, from the first letter to the last

HMRC investigation help in Barry usually starts with one letter: a compliance check into your VAT, your accounts or a Self Assessment return. We read it, we answer it, and we deal with HMRC for you.

Most owners open that letter and have no idea what HMRC is actually asking for. Our clients do not pay us extra when an enquiry opens, because tax investigation cover is included free. Every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won.

In one lineSupreme Consultants is an AAT licensed accountancy practice at Titan House in Cardiff Bay that handles HMRC enquiries and compliance checks for businesses in Barry and across South Wales. Work is done on a fixed fee agreed in writing before it starts, and tax investigation cover is included free for every client.

Is your HMRC post in good hands? Three questions.

Answer with the buttons; nothing is emailed and nobody calls you afterwards.

Question 1 of 3

If HMRC wrote to you tomorrow, would your accountant deal with it at no extra cost?

What you get

Tax investigation cover included free

If HMRC opens an enquiry into your business, we deal with it and you do not pay us extra. Other firms sell this as an add-on for £300 to £1,000 a year.

Someone who answers HMRC, not you

We become your agent with HMRC, take the correspondence and put the figures in front of them. You get told what was sent and what happens next.

A fee you know before we start

The fee is agreed in writing first. Ring us the day the letter arrives and the call costs nothing.

What Barry owners tell us when they call

These are the three things we hear most in the first phone call about an HMRC letter.

  • “HMRC has written to me about my VAT and I do not know what the letter means.”

The deadline in the letter kept running while he worked out who to ask. Answering late turns a check into a bigger one.

  • “I got a bill I cannot make sense of and my accountant has not called back.”

He paid it because nobody explained it. Part of it turned out to be payments on account built on estimates.

  • “My accountant says dealing with this is extra work, so there will be another invoice.”

The fee he agreed in January was no longer the fee. He stopped ringing, and the file got worse.

  • What changes once we take it on

We register as your agent and ask HMRC for everything they hold on you. You send us the letter, we send the reply, and we tell you in plain English what HMRC wants and when. If an enquiry opens while you are a client, we handle it and you pay us nothing more.

How this usually works elsewhere, and how it works with us

Plenty of good accountants handle enquiries; the difference is what it costs you and how fast you hear back.

The usual arrangement

Investigation cover sold as a yearly add-on, £300 to £1,000.

Enquiry work billed by the hour on top of your fee.

A reply when the partner gets to it.

The letter forwarded back to you to interpret.

With Supreme Consultants

Tax investigation cover included free for every client.

A fixed fee agreed in writing before any work starts.

A reply the same working day, every time.

We answer HMRC as your agent and tell you what was said.

Eight questions about how you would handle an HMRC letter

Answer each one yes or no about your current set-up.

  • Do you know who opens your HMRC post?

A letter sitting behind the till for three weeks is how deadlines get missed.

  • Is your accountant registered as your agent with HMRC?

Without agent authorisation they cannot ring HMRC or see your record.

  • Would enquiry work be charged on top of your current fee?

Ask now, because the answer changes once the letter is on the desk.

  • Do you have tax investigation cover?

Most firms sell it separately, so check whether you ever bought it.

  • Are your VAT returns backed by records you could hand over?

A VAT compliance check asks for the workings, not just the return.

  • Do you know what your last HMRC bill was actually for?

Payments on account based on estimates are the usual answer.

  • Has anything been filed late in the last two years?

Late filings are often what prompts HMRC to look closer.

  • Can you ring your accountant without it ending up on an invoice?

If you cannot, you will delay the call that matters most.

What going through every line of an HMRC account can turn up

A client came to us owing HMRC around £20,000 across Corporation Tax, VAT and Self Assessment, with no idea what the debts were for. We asked HMRC for the full picture and worked through it line by line.

Clients described by type. Names withheld.

How it was found
Much of the Self Assessment balance was payments on account based on estimates, so we filed his return early.
What happened
That part of the debt was cancelled, HMRC wrote off the interest charged on it, and he knew exactly what he owed.

I just want to say a big thank you to Mudassir for all the advice, guidance and help he has provided whilst dealing with my accounts and tax returns. From start to finish the service has been excellent and professional. Unlike other accountancy firms they provide a friendly personalised service, I was very clear on the process and was even provided with additional guidance where needed. Highly recommended!

Who we are not right for

Businesses already late in an HMRC investigation, where the key deadlines have passed.

CIS construction subcontractors.

Charities, and one-off Self Assessment or capital gains returns with nothing ongoing.

If that is you, say so in the check and we will tell you straight rather than take the work.

HMRC investigation help in Barry: questions people ask

What does HMRC investigation help in Barry cost?

For our clients it costs nothing extra. Tax investigation cover is included free for every client, so if HMRC opens an enquiry we deal with it and you do not pay us more. Your ongoing accountancy work is a fixed fee agreed in writing before we start, and calls, meetings and emails are never charged on top.

Can you take over from my current accountant while HMRC is asking questions?

Usually yes, as long as the enquiry is not already late. We write to your current accountant for your records so you do not have to make that call, complete ID checks, and get authorised as your agent with HMRC. The handover carries no separate charge.

What happens if HMRC writes to me or opens a compliance check?

Send us the letter the day it arrives. We tell you which tax it concerns and what HMRC is actually asking for, then we reply as your agent and keep to the dates in the letter. We cannot promise an outcome, and every HMRC investigation we have handled, we have won.

Do I have to change my accounting software?

No. We work with the cloud software you already use. If you would rather move to Xero we do the migration free, but it is your decision and nothing about an HMRC enquiry depends on it. We can also keep the bookkeeping ourselves if your records are behind.

Do you have to be in Barry to help a Barry business?

We are based at Titan House in Cardiff Bay, about fifteen minutes up the road. Work is done remotely, in person at our office, or a mix. Over 90% of our clients are in South Wales, and we know the Welsh rules that accountants outside Wales miss, such as rates reliefs councils only give to businesses that apply.

Who will actually deal with HMRC on my file?

Supreme Consultants is an AAT licensed practice run by Shaista Awais MAAT, the director, and Mudassir Dehghani, our Practice Manager. One of them reads your questions and replies the same working day. If the answer needs longer, we still come back that day to say when.
